Not Me!

Do you ever feel guilty for pretending not to notice as your child sucks toothpaste right out of the tube, or shreds an entire roll of toilet paper...all so you can simply take a shower? After all, you would rather have them quiet and occupied instead of banging on the glass shower door right? Are you thinking "Not me"? Well, I am guilty! I may get funny looks at church for letting my 4 year old color in a Mickey Mouse coloring book while eating obnoxious amounts of snacks. Fellow Post Office customers may think I am crazy for sticking a lollipop into my 1 year old's mouth while waiting in line. If you visited my house while I was doing dishes you might chuckle at my 3 year old filling up 500 plastic cups of water all so I can load the dishwasher and clean the sink. I think I even surprised my husband when he recently yelled "honey, your baby is eating dirt out of the flower pot in the backyard..." (I was trying to straighten my hair, something I hardly ever do). Well, I had a recent experience that made me reflect on all of these things I do, or let my kids do, in order to keep them occupied. Is that so horrible? Well one lady thought so. On a recent run, I stopped by a local donut shop on our route to help cheer McKenzie up and stop Brynn from crying. (They get bored in the jogging stroller after so many miles.) After purchasing two small donuts (only one per kid at least) the store clerk said in chopped up English, "you give baby donut already?" "Nah, not me," was all I could think to say.

I totally get it, and almost anything to keep my kids busy/quiet/happy gets a thumbs up from me : )

That's so funny. I'm guilty. Eric's grandma is visiting from out of state right now, and on Sunday I totally saw her watching me & wondering why I let my kids have three bags of fruit snacks each, and a bag of goldfish during sacrament meeting. Anything to keep them quiet, I say.
I have lots of other examples, as well. You're not alone!

Great post--I love the honesty.

TV is the ultimate example of this.

It is always interesting to see how things change with the second child.

Yes, I too turn a blind eye to things all in the name of having a moment to myself. Usually I am thinking, "I'm in the middle of something and I just don't have the energy to make a fuss about this right now. I'd rather clean up this mess later"

So you are definitely not alone. Thank you for making me feel that I am not alone either! And that your kids eat donuts too! (I sometimes wonder how bad of a mom I really am with the amount of junk my kids are given in public places, just to keep them quiet!) :)

I stalked and found your blog! :) So did you guys like UP? Zach LOVES balloons and always pays attention for the previews, but we didn't know if he would like the whole thing. We found that water park a couple of years ago and Zach LOVES it and hates leaving. He gets soaked almost everyday just helping grandma and grandpa do whatever and then run through sprinklers, so the park just mixes it up a little :)
